Morton Castle is built high upon a hillside overlooking Morton Loch in Dumfries-shire. The castle is in hills to the east of the River Nith, and was held as part of the Barony of Nithsdale, created in the 12th century as one of a number of strategic border lordships along the western march between England and Scotland.
