While prisons were not a common feature in classical Rome, one ancient lock-up has survived and is now said to have held some of the Bible’s most hallowed saints. These two cells, which now hide beneath a church, were created on top of one the other. An upside-down cross decorates the altar in the lower cell, giving the damp dungeon an eerie air.
