When I lived in Magdeburg, Germany I visited the beautiful Schloss Wernigerode in the Harz mountains, and it has since become one of my favorites. Similar in style to Bavaria’s Neuschwanstein, albeit smaller, this baroque style castle was once a medieval fortress. A little over 1 mile/2 km from the Wernigerode train station, you can easily reach the castle by foot. If you’d rather not walk up the hill to the castle, you can hop on the cute Bimmelbahn tourist train. Once at the top, be sure to enjoy the stunning view of historic Wernigerode below! There are a couple different tours you can choose from in order to explore different parts of the castle, and there are discounted rates for kids and families. Once you’ve had enough of the castle, be sure to walk back down to the town center and take in the beautiful half-timber buildings in the market square.
