It is located in Borgund in Lærdal municipality , in Sogn and Fjordane counties , approx. 30 km east of the village of Lærdalsøyri , which lies at the heart of the Sognefjord . This church is considered the best preserved of our stave churches from the Middle Ages , and has in many cases been a model when other stave churches were to be restored. It has been attempted to be copied several times
